About the Library
The Rothwell Congregational Library is a private archive collection of antiquarian books, manuscripts, lectures, sermons and documents pertaining to the Congregational and Nonconformist movement — established to preserve the literary and theological heritage of one of England’s most enduring religious traditions.
The collection is focused on pre-twentieth-century literature with a relationship to Rothwell and its ministers, and more broadly to the Congregational chapels of Northamptonshire and the surrounding region. Many of the volumes held here represent voices that helped shape Nonconformist thought through periods of conformity, dissent, and revival, from the seventeenth century onwards.
Holdings include early printed sermons, ecclesiastical histories, doctrinal treatises, hymnody, biographical memoirs, and personal manuscripts from clergy and laity who served the Congregational cause. Where possible, each volume is catalogued with full bibliographic detail, condition notes and provenance, so that every work can be understood in its proper place within the wider tradition.
Scope of the collection
The library is organised around several overlapping strands of Nonconformist writing and record-keeping:
- Local imprints and ministers. Works by, for, or concerning the Congregational ministers of Rothwell and its neighbouring chapels, together with chapel histories and church records that document the daily life of dissenting congregations.
- Doctrinal and theological writing. Sermons, expositions and treatises from across the Nonconformist tradition, including the broader literature exemplified by writers such as Isaac Watts and Philip Doddridge whose influence shaped Congregational thought far beyond their own pulpits.
- Devotional and pastoral literature. Hymnals, prayer books, catechisms and conduct manuals that reflect the spiritual life and pastoral care of dissenting communities through several centuries.
- Historical and biographical records. Ministerial biographies, family papers, and primary documents that illuminate the social and religious history of Nonconformist communities in the Midlands and beyond.
The Portfolio presents a public summary of the current holdings. The Wants list records titles we are actively seeking, and against which we are happy to consider donations or offers of sale.
Visiting and research
The library is private and its holdings are kept in carefully controlled conditions. Visits are by arrangement only, and the curator is happy to correspond with researchers, genealogists, ministers, students, and anyone with a serious interest in the history of Nonconformist religious life in England.
Where a particular volume might inform a specific line of enquiry — whether a family history, an academic paper, or the history of a particular chapel — please do not hesitate to write. We are also glad to hear from those who hold or have come across volumes that might fit the collection’s focus, and to discuss contributions on terms that are right for the donor.
